00 Gauge St Johns IOM Scottish type Signal Box Card Kit

00 Gauge St Johns IOM Scottish type Signal Box Card Kit

THIS IS A CARD KIT THAT YOU NEED TO ASSEMBLE.
00 Gauge St Johns IOM Scottish type Signal Box Card Kit
An “Elro” OO Gauge 4mm scale kit for the signal box erected by J & W Grainger, a leading Scottish railway contractor at St John’s in the Isle of Man in November 1879. The box was built at the insistence of the Isle of Man Railway Co but at Manx Northern Railway expense to control the junction between the Peel and Ramsey lines in 1879. Construction of the box was awarded to J & W Grainger, a long established railway contracting company, and is to an unusual early design. It was rough faced stone to window level and timber above, and was fitted with a 10 lever Stevens frame. Instead of the later shallow opening for point rods ands signal wires, a rectangular opening some five feet high was provided at the front and back of the box. Although an accurate model of one specific prototype, the box does not have any obvious company affinities, so unlike a GWR or LNWR box, is suited to a wide variety of independent and minor lines. Actors will tell you never to act with kids or animals, as they steal the scene, and railway modellers will caution you against blending a model into a real setting in a photo, for the model may look good on its own, but the finer detail on the full size surroundings gives it away. When we completed the PROVING MODEL for our St John’s signal box kit and photographed it, we thought it would be fun to see how it looked in the real setting, so took a forty year old view of the real location and superimposed the MODEL onto the real scene. We think it looks pretty good. If you look at the random stone with its uneven quoins, that is exactly what they were like. We know, because we photographed the real structure and measured it up. The bargeboard below the main windows looks a bit chewed at the near corner, and if you looked at the real box in the 1960s, that is exactly how it was, but we also include a pristine barge board in the kit if you prefer it ! If you look through the windows, you can see the tops of the levers. They are a part of the kit, but you cant see the Stevens makers plates on the end of the quadrant plate, nor can you see the correct internal framework on the back wall of the box. With most boxes, the below floor part of the lever frame is discretely out of sight, but the big hole in the front and back of St John’s box means it is on view. If you look carefully you can see the pedestal cranks and pedestal pulleys at ground level which translated thew vertical motion from the interlocking to pulling the point rods and signal wires. That is a part of the kit, as are the supports for the quadrant plate and the lever tails. When wee started work on the kit we had not planned to include them, but looking at the big empty hole, we thought how much nicer our model would look if we did, and then said “why not”, so we did ! If you wonder why the top step is painted red, but the rest are weathered cement, we don’t know, but that is the way it was, so that is how we did it. To complete the kit, you will need scissors/craft knife, a steel ruler, glue, scrap card, glazing material, and some wire for the lever pivot ro and point rodding plus a plastic tube or cocktail stick for the stove pipe. The use of Felt tip pens or paint to touch in exposed edges of the card will markedly improve your model.
The origins of this kit were that we wanted a Great Easstern Railway signal box for a friend, and spent a couple of years looking for a suitable kit in O Gauge with no success, but plenty of promises from manufacturers that they would look into it. When we started making kits ourselves, we decided we would have a go, and sales exceeded our expectations. We followed that up with a South Eastern Railway box, but the MNR box is very much a personal favourite, but one that does have potential for wider use.
In this age of plastic and resin, the use of card in a kit may seem “old-fashioned”, but card is a very versatile and convenient modelling medium, and where small production runs are called for, is ideal, as it offers versatility at low cost. To do a small production run for a structure like this in plastic or resin would put up the cost 10 or 20 fold. The kit consists of seven sheets of pre-printed fully coloured card, along with detailed instructions and a photo of a completed model for you to refer to during construction. THE CARD IS QUITE THIN, BUT THIS MEANS IT BENDS SMOOTHLY WHERE NECESSARY IN A WAY THAT THICK CARD WILL NOT DO. IT ALSO MEANS THAT EXCELLENT 3-D EFFECTS ARE POSSIBLE WITH THE MULTIPLE LAYERS INCLUDED IN THE KIT. IT IS MORE WORK TO DESIGN AND BUILD USING MULTIPLE LAYERS, BUT THEFINISHED MODEL IS BETTER AND STRONGER .HOWEVER, WE DO RECOMMEND THAT STRUCTURAL AREAS SHOULD BE REINFORCED WITH ADDITIONAL SCRAP CARD THAT IS CHEAPLY AVAILABLE FROM STATIONERS OR YOU CAN USE CORNFLAKE PACKETS ETC IF YOU ARE KEEN ON RECYCLING. Apart from bending much more smoothly than a thick sheet of card, the thinner card we use means that unlike most die-cast or plastic models, where the window frames are much too thick, the windows are not inset too far, greatly enhancing realism.
In assembling the sides, we make up a “sandwich” comprising the pre-printed sides, the glazing and the interior. Modellers differ in their preferences over glazing, and rather than supply what you may not like we leave the choice up to you. Some modellers like thin glazing, but we find that this tends to buckle, so recommend 1mm glazing in O gauge and 0.5mm in OO. The kit includes sides, ends, floors, roof, stairs, and interior detailing, including the stone work in the locking room, rendered finish below the windows (with peeling paint as per the original), the wood framework above plus the lever frame. The MNR box housed a 10 lever frame, but could have been fitted with a larger frame, so we have included spare levers in a variety of colours to give more choice to the modeller. The IMR did NOT use the block telegraph, but most modellers would need block instruments, so we have included an optional block shelf with block instruments etc. To construct the sides, the window frames are cut out, and then an overlay that must also be cut out for the structural timbers, is placed over this, creating a realistic 3D effect. Separate window frames are cut out, glazed and inserted behind the main sheet. The same procedure is followed with the ends, whilst the staircase is built up from several layers of card to produce a realistic and robust model of the SER stairs. This does take time and effort, and if you want a “shake the box” kit, then this is NOT for you, but the proving model shows what can be done. The only item that does not appear in the photo apart from the backdrop are the handrails, which are bent up from a length of wire, as card is not a viable material for a handrail made up from bent gas piping !
Whilst the kit can be built up with a high level of detail with interior fittings, it can also be assembled as a simple non glazed “box” by a younger or less experienced modeller. Unlike expensive etched brass kits that many modellers believe are too daunting to tackle and are very costly, this card kit is readily affordable and is a good start to modelling. If it is your first card kit, then it probably wont look as good as the model in the photo. That is no reflection on your skills, but reflections on my own first efforts which were not that good, but the beauty of a card kit is that if you do merss it up, it is not mega bucks down the drain.
When building the proving model in the photo, we added wore handrails, but otherwise the kit is as per the production kits and shows what can be achieved.

0 Gauge Country Station Building Foxdale IMR Card Kit

0 Gauge Country Station Building Foxdale IMR Card Kit

THIS IS A CARD KIT THAT YOU NEED TO ASSEMBLE.
0 Gauge Country Station Building Foxdale IMR Card Kit
This “Elro” O Gauge 1:43 scale CARD kit assembles into a detailed model of the buildings that were erected by John Glen of Kilsyth, Scotland, for the Foxdale Railway Co in the Isle of Man in 1886 at St John’s New station and at Foxdale itself. Although a model of a specific prototype, the general arrangement, with a booking office, waiting room, ladies room and gents and ladies conveniences, typifies nineteenth century station buildings erected at smaller stations throughout the British Isles. Because the majority of available kits are for a handful of leading companies, such as the GWR or LNWR, and which are not therefore suited to other companies, this structure, which would look equally at home in Kent, East Anglia, the Midlands, Scotland or Ireland, fills a serious gap in the structures available to the modeller. St John’s New Station was a through station, whilst Foxdale was a terminus, showing that the design was equally suited to a wayside country station or a branch terminus. The building itself is a scale 47 feet long by 21 feet deep, but with a roof overhang of 1 ft 6ins on all four side, occupies a total space of 50 feet by 24 feet. The original was of red brick construction with creamy-white corner bricks or quoins. The edge of the window openings are also quoined, whilst the brick arches are white brick as well, this form of decoration being common at the height of the Victorian era. Instead of an enclosed booking hall, there is a roofed circulating area, but after buying his ticket from the ticket window, the passenger could go into the general waiting room or ladies waiting room. The ladies’ toilet was accessed from the Ladies room, but as was so often the case, the gents was reached from a separate entrance outside, again with an elegantly quoined door. The station offices comprises the booking office itself and a small room next to it which may have been a goods store or a porters room., but as Foxdale station was unstaffed from as early as 1912, no details of its exact use survive. Although the external walls were brick, the internal partitions were match boarded timber, and are included in the kit, together with the three fireplaces and a range of fittings for the booking office, including the sliding door to the booking hatch, the booking clerk’s desk, the ticket cabinet and a drumhead clock. The modeller can complete the building to suit his own requirements, and as many high Victorian stations survive on Network Rail today, the model is suited to any layout set from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Although not an LNWR or GW design, the big companies took over many small local companies so included non standard structures, meaning that it could quite readily be given a GWR look should the modeller wish, to give one example. The photo illustrating this item is of the PROVING MODEL for our kit, as we always build a test model to ensure it all fits together. With the low lighting angle, you can see the internal match boarding on the partitions through the windows. Although it is not easy to see on a small photo, the matchboarding on the partition to the right of the entrance door is at 5.5 ins spacing rather than the 3 ins pitch of the other matchboarding, as this was a later addition, and this interesting variation is recaptured faithfully in the kit. The slated roof is another strong point of the kit. Many manufacturers provide you with a single sheet of roofing paper or card, but slates are laid in overlapping rows. With our kit, you can adopt the single sheet approach, which is simple and quick, but sufficient sheets of slates are included in the artwork to allow you to overlap each layer. This takes time, but the result is well worth the effort. To complete the kit, you will need scissors/craft knife, a steel ruler, glue, lots of scrap card, glazing material, and guttering and drain pipes,. as these items cannot be made from card. The use of Felt tip pens or paint to touch in exposed edges of the card will markedly improve your model.
IT IS MORE WORK TO DESIGN AND BUILD USING MULTIPLE LAYERS, BUT THEFINISHED MODEL IS BETTER AND STRONGER .HOWEVER, WE DO RECOMMEND WITH ALL OUR KITS THAT STRUCTURAL AREAS SHOULD BE REINFORCED WITH ADDITIONAL SCRAP CARD THAT IS CHEAPLY AVAILABLE FROM STATIONERS OR YOU CAN USE CORNFLAKE PACKETS ETC IF YOU ARE KEEN ON RECYCLING. Additional card is particularly important in this case for two reasons, (a) the size of the structure and (b) the brick walls are 15-17 ins deep, and if you build them to the correct depth, it enhances realism. We do not supply the scrap card in the kit, as you will be able to obtain material more cheaply than we could do so for you, so if we supplied the added card, it would add markedly to your overall cost. For the same reason, we do not supply GLAZING. Some modellers like very thin glazing. This looks good when new, but often warps after a few months, ruining the appearance, and has no structural strength. In O Gauge we recommend 1mm glazing and 0.5mm in OO. If we supplied glazing it would put up the cost, and it might not be your preference, so we leave it to you, though we strongly recommend the sizes we have mentioned. In assembling the sides, we make up a “sandwich” comprising the pre-printed sides, the glazing, strengthening card and the interior.
The kit includes sides, ends, floors, roof, and interior detailing, including the wood panelling, fireplaces, ticket hatch etc, and these act as patterns where you need to add reinforcing card, making construction much less effort than with scratch building. However, we would emphasise that this is NOT a “shake the box and it falls together” kit. That is no reflection on your skills, but reflects on my own first efforts which were not that good, but the beauty of a card kit is that if you do mess it up, it is not mega bucks down the drain. The end result depends on the effort you put in. Apart from glazing and scrap card, you will also need suitable metal or plastic sections for the guttering and the downpipes, and as the rafters that support the roof are visible for them. You can make them from two or three lengths of card glued together, and a supply of templates are included, or you can make them from plastic or wood, which looks much better,
Other structure kits we produce include the IOMR signal box at St Johns, and GER and SER signal boxes and GER huts. Other buildings are planned.
